Harry Leroy "Sam" Kreie, 85, died Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at Golden Living Center at Independence, Missouri. He was born on April 5, 1924 in Ford County, Kansas the son of Harry L. and Minnie (Richardson) Kreie. Leroy graduated from Ford High School, Ford, Kansas in 1943. He immediately entered the U.S. Army and served from 1943 through 1946. He served in the European Theater in the Infantry Division during the Rhineland Central Battle in WWII. On July 20, 1956 he married Melva Bowers at Kansas Wesleyan University Methodist Church in Salina, Kansas. Mr. Kreie spent most of his life farming and ranching in Ford County.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Howard Gotschall Post #1714, V.F.W. both of Dodge City.
Survivors include his wife Melva Kreie of Dodge City; a son, Greg Kreie and wife Donna of Grain Valley, Missouri; two sisters, Barbara Beck and husband Clyde of Salina, and Alma Brown of Odessa, Texas; a sister-in-law, Elfrieda Bowers of Dodge City; and four grandchildren, Rachel of Garden City, Colton of Kansas City, Missouri, and Kaitlyn and Boston of Grain Valley, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Mattie Patterson, Nela Luther, Irene Lindblom; three brothers, Lenard Kreie, Otto Kreie and Jerry Kreie.
Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Home on Friday, April 10, 2009 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Adelia Hooley and Rev. Dennis Zimmerman presiding. Burial will follow at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery in Ft. Dodge, Kansas with military graveside rites by Howard Gotschall Post #1714 V.F.W.. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Thursday, April 9, 2009 from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Memorials can be made to First United Methodist Church or Asera Care Hospice both in care of the funeral home.
