Obituary

Satanta - Hazel Lorene Cain, 81, died July 23, 2013 at the Satanta Long Term Care Unit in Satanta. Hazel was born to Blanche Hazel (Jennison) and George Raymond Wilson near Meade on January 7, 1932.

Hazel attended high school in Satanta and lived most of her life there. She attended Dodge City Community College and graduated as a licensed practical nurse in 1964. She enjoyed working with the elderly and worked in nursing homes in Satanta, Hugoton and Liberal. On April 1, 1950, she married Clifford H. Pendergraft in Liberal. On July 1, 1965 she married Ralph O. (Jack) Cain at the Pleasant Prairie Church of God near Satanta. Hazel enjoyed reading murder mysteries and took classes in painting and carpentry. She especially enjoyed researching the family genealogy and enjoyed sharing that information with the remainder of the family. Hazel was the family historian and caretaker of the family photo archive.

She is survived by four children, Tom Pendergraft and wife Lisa, Linda Kennedy and husband Jerry, Sandra Carter and husband Gary, all of Satanta, and Kent Pendergraft and wife Mary of Garden City; a brother, Leon Wilson and wife Loveyla of Satanta; a sister, Mary Ellen Gum of Johnson; eight grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by both husbands; her parents; her son, Timothy Pendergraft; one sister, Carol Grund; a granddaughter, Latricia Carter; a grandson, Thomas Cody Pendergraft; a great granddaughter, Adrianna Carter; and a foster brother, Harold Clark.

At her request, Hazel's body has been donated to the University of Kansas Medical Center for educational purposes. A Celebration of her life is to be held at the Pleasant Prairie Church of God, Satanta on Friday, August 2, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Satanta Long Term Care Unit in care of Swaim Funeral Chapel of Sublette, 115 S. Inman, Sublette, KS 6787.
