Spearville - Hazel Lou (Rethorst) Herron, 92, went to be with the Lord on November 9, 2017. She was born on June 11, 1925 in Hutchinson, the daughter of Louis and Hazel (Ott) Rethorst.
Hazel attended school in Spearville, graduating from high school in 1943. She then attended College at Emporia, graduating in 1947 with a Home Economics degree. She then taught for two years in Lyons. Hazel married Cecil Herron on June 5, 1949. After raising their six children, she went back to teaching in the Windthorst and Spearville school districts.
Hazel was a member of the Spearville Federated Church. She devoted her time and years to serving the Lord and her church, as a Sunday School Teacher, United Presbyterian Women, Honorary Life Member of the UPW, and Elder of the Church. Hazel was also a pianist and organist for many years, playing for funerals, weddings, and Sunday services, including the Sunday service immediately preceding her death.
Hazel leaves as survivors, her children Linda (Jim) Ruda, Hays; Jim (Mary) Herron, Upland, California; Mike Schroeder, Osage City; Janet (Chuck) Konrade, Spearville; Patti (Tim) Burkhart, Kinsley; and Debby (Bill) Fox, Ashland; her brother Bob (Lois) Rethorst, Smith Center; 16 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Cecil; their daughter Nancy Schroeder; her sister Maurine Gragson, and her parents.
Funeral service will be held at Spearville Federated Church on Monday, November 13, 2017 at 2:00 PM with Kevin Salzman and Barney Korbelik presiding. Interment at Silent Land Cemetery in Spearville will take place immediately following the service. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel on Sunday, November 12, 2017 from 12:00-6:00 PM. Memorials in Hazel's name are suggested to the Spearville Federated Church in care of the funeral home. Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guest book at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.
