DODGE CITY - Helen Elizabeth Barhydt, 87, died Monday, June 21, 2010 at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains at Dodge City. Helen was born on December 28, 1922 at Atchison, Kansas, the daughter of Howard and Rose (Beckman) Weinmann. She attended rural schools in Atchison County and graduated from Atchison High School in 1940. She moved with her parents to Topeka after graduation and worked briefly at Pelitier's Department Store in Topeka. She moved again to Dodge City in the early 40's with her parents and worked at Eckles Department Store and then at the Fidelity State Bank. It was at the bank that she met her future husband, Robert E. Barhydt. They were married June 8, 1947 at the First Methodist Church in Dodge City. Shortly after her marriage she began her career as a housewife and mother.
Helen played an active role in her sons' Cub Scouting and was active in PTA for all her children and was a DCHS Band Booster. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, the Athenium Club,and a charter member of HM Chapter of P.E.O. all of Dodge City.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert (Bob) and her brother Carl J. Weinmann. Survivors include two sons, Robert H. Barhydt and wife Joan of Salina, and Fred Barhydt and wife Melissa of Georgetown, Texas; a daughter Julie Westmacott and husband John of Dodge City; her grandchildren, Rob Barhydt and Amy Wolfmule of Salina, Jacob Westmacott of Easton, Maryland, Johanna Westmacott of Brooklyn, New York, Jennifer Westmacott of Overland Park, Katy and Drew Barhydt of Georgetown, Texas; and great grandchildren are Gavin Wolfmule and Rhiannon Westmacott.
Funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 25, 2010 at Swaim Funeral Home with Rev. Lance Carrithers presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City. Visitation will be from Noon to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, June 24, 2010 at the funeral home with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.. Memorials are suggested to Manor Of The Plains or First United Methodist Church both in care of the funeral home.
