Helen Gayle Johnson, 71, died Saturday, October 10, 2009 at Western Plains Medical Complex at Dodge City, KS. She was born on December 9, 1937 at Ft. Smith, Arkansas the daughter of John Henry and Ollie Arzella Brown.
Mrs. Johnson taught at Miller Elementary School until her retirement. She was a avid sports fan especially golf and tennis. She also enjoyed her soap operas. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing and playing bingo. She received a Associates of Arts Degree from Dodge City Community College, and also received a bachelors degree in education from St. Mary of The Plains College.
She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Dodge City, KNEA and the Ford County Election Comittee.
Survivors include daughter Gaye Lynne Johnson of Dodge City, Kansas, and one son Arthur Johnson of Norton, Kansas. She also survived by two granddaughters Tisha Johnson of Dodge City, Kansas, and Breanna Stein of Centropolis, Kansas. two grandsons Demetrius Johnson and Darius Johnson of Centropolis, Kansas. A great grandson Dante Johnson of Dodge City, Kansas.
Five brothers Arthur Brown of Dodge City, Kansas, Willie Brown of Wichita, Kansas, Charles Brown of Wichita, Kansas, Robert Brown of Sacramento, California, Virgil Brown of Larned, Kansas, and one sister Valerie Brown of Lincoln, Nebraska.
Companion-Jesus Zapata of Dodge City, Kansas
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers John, Lawrence, and Paul Brown.
Visitation will be held at Swaim Funeral Home on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 12:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Home on Friday October 16, 2009 at 10:00 AM with Bishop Anthony Glover presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City, KS. Memorials can be made to Helen Johnson Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home.
