DODGE CITY - Henry Stenzel, Jr., 90, died Monday, September 27, 2010 at Western Plains Medical Complex at Dodge City. He was born on November 17, 1919 at Russell, Kansas the son of Henry and Mollie (Schneider) Stenzel, Sr.. He grew up in Russell and later moved to WaKeeney. During WWII he served in the U.S. Army with the 35th Infantry Europe ETO under General Patton. On January 11, 1953 he married LaVera R. Deines at Russell. They lived in Wakeeney after their marriage and later moved to Dodge City in 1955. She preceded him in death on February 26, 1989. Mr. Stenzel worked in production for Fairmont Foods of Dodge City for 20 years and then for four years at McDonald's Restaurant.
He was a member of Christ The King Lutheran Church and Howard Gotschall Post #1714, V.F.W. both of Dodge City and Sunflower Polka Club.
Survivors include two son, Marvin Stenzel and Donald Stenzel of Dodge City; three daughters, Roberta Hornbaker of Copeland, Ruth Wire of Dodge City, and Debbra Stenzel of Garden City; a brother, Samuel Stenzel of Iowa; a sister, Esther Mellies of Dodge City; 15 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four brothers, Leo, Dave, Manuel and George Stenzel; and two sisters, Agatha Garcia and Frieda Olive.
Funeral service will be held at Christ The King Lutheran Church on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Kent Groethe and Harold H. Koehn presiding. Burial will follow at Greencrest Cemetery in Dodge City with military graveside rites conducted by Howard Gotschall Post #1714, V.F.W.. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 from Noon to 8:00 PM.
