Obituary

Montezuma – Herbert  (Herb) P. Ensz was born to John A. and Lena (Penner) Ensz on August 24, 1939 near Inman.  He passed away peacefully at Bethel Home in Montezuma on June 27, 2021 at the age of 81 years.

Dad spent his boyhood years in McPherson County.  He had 10 siblings.  Dad gave his heart to God and was baptized in the Church of God in Christ Mennonite on February 20, 1955 by Minister Dave Penner.  His Christian walk with the Lord was very important to him.  We have many memories of him studying the Bible and other books and praying often for us.

Dad served his 1W service in Denver, Colorado for two years.  He worked as an orderly in St. Luke's Hospital.  He married me, Jean Haynes, on October 25, 1964 in Carson City, Michigan.  We shared lifes joys and sorrows for  56 years.  Two children were added to this union.  We were picked by our parents and were very loved and supported.

We lived many places, Inman; Barron, Wisconsin; Macon, Mississippi; Paris, Texas; Rochester, Minnesota; Fountain Run, Kentucky; Sun City, Arizona; and finally Montezuma.  Our parents were loved where ever they went.  In Paris, they spent many years as youth leaders.  In Rochester, dad worked as a garbologist. They also were relief house papa and mama for the girl's unit and guest house as needed.  In his younger years, dad loved to sing.  We can still hear his bass on some songs. In his later years, he spent many hours reading gospel songs.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Jean of Montezuma; two children; daughter, Sonya and Sean Nightingale of Lime Springs, Iowa and son, Sheldon of Fountain Run, Kentucky; two grandchildren, Carlyne and Tanner Gugler of Ellis and Scott Nightingale of Lime Springs, Iowa; one great grandson, Joseph Scott Gugler of Ellis; his siblings, Raymond and Joan Ensz of Iroquois, South Dakota, Norman and Pearl Ensz of Inman, Pearl (Mrs. Alva) Ensz of Montezuma, Edna and Curtis Wiebe of Buhl, Idaho, Marlene Wiebe of Inman, Frances Koehn of Macon, Mississippi, John and LaVerna of Brookhaven, Mississippi, Gene and Kathy Ensz of Dalhart, Texas, Melvin and Glenda Ensz of Inman, and Lucille Ensz of Inman; his wife's family, brother-in-laws, Myron Koehn of Macon, Mississippi, Maynard and Erma Haynes of Barron, Wisconsin, Ken and Diane of Carson City, Michigan, Gordon and Geneva Haynes of Fountain Run, Kentucky; sisters-in-law, Ellen and Arlin Koehn of Macon, Mississippi and Theda Lowery of Fountain Run, Kentucky; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends, including 124 Rochester girls.  Those gone before him are his parents, parents-in-law, one brother, four brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, and his daughter-in-law.

Funeral service will be held at Montezuma Mennonite Church on Thursday, July 1, 2021 at 10:30 AM.  Burial will follow at Montezuma Mennonite Cemetery.  Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Montezuma on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
