Dodge City - Irma Jane Cox, 76, died June 4, 2025 at her home in Dodge City. She was born on June 22, 1948 in Dodge City, the daughter of Wade Brown and Wilma Mae (Denton) Smith.
Irma was a lifetime resident of Dodge City. She graduated from Dodge City High School and then went on to further her education at Dodge City Community College, completing her degree and earning her license as an LPN. Irma married Danny Cox in 1968 and they had three daughters, Dana, Julie, and Rossi. They later divorced.
Irma worked at Trinity Hospital for a time before returning to DCCC to complete her RN training. She then worked at several area nursing homes and hospitals, including Western Plains Medical Complex and Hilltop House in Bucklin, as well as being a nurse for National Beef and Cargill. Irma loved being a nurse and continued to work until August of 2024 when she retired due to her health. She enjoyed the casino and her garden. Irma adored her grandsons and being a part of their activities. She also loved "chicken day" with her brothers.
She is survived by her daughter, Dana Jane Cox of Dodge City; two grandsons, Waydan Cox of Dodge City and Tyler Cox of Manhattan; one sister, Joyce Barnes of Kansas City, Kansas; three brothers, Jim Smith of Vista, California, Tom Smith of Dodge City, and Chad Smith and wife Chris also of Dodge City; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Irma is preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Julie and Rossi Cox; and six siblings, Alvin Denton, Vernon Smith, Jackie McDowell, Ray Smith, Boots Hunter, and Mickie Denton.
A come and go celebration of Irma's life will be held at I Don't Care Restaurant, Dodge City on Friday, June 13, 2025, with lunch being served, beginning at 1:00 PM. A book signing will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Dodge City on Thursday, June 12, 2025 from noon to 4:00 PM with the family present from 2-4 PM. Cremation has taken place.
