Obituary

Sublette - James Dallas Morris, 89, died December 4, 2023, at the Satanta District Hospital.  He was born on February 16, 1934, in Jerome, Iowa the son of James and Esther (Day) Morris.

James spent his childhood on the family farm near Plano, Iowa where he attended school.  His junior year of high school, he moved to Satanta to live with his sister.  He returned home to help his dad on the farm and finished his senior year, graduating from Centerville High School in 1952.  After graduation, he returned to southwest Kansas and went to work at the Northern Natural gas plant.


On June 15, 1955, James was united in marriage to Dvonne Hill in Las Vegas, New Mexico.  They made their home in Sublette and James continued to work at the gas plant and started a trenching business, putting in gas lines to many irrigation systems in Kansas and Oklahoma.  In 1974, James began farming in Haskell County.  He retired from Northern Natural after 29 years of service and focused on the farm.  James was an avid antique collector.  He enjoyed finding the unique items to add to his collection. James had several restored automobiles which he enjoyed driving in local parades and car shows.

James is survived by two children, DeAnn Hammer and husband Steve of Sublette and Kevin Morris and wife Becky of Sublette; four grandchildren, Jerrad Hammer (Amanda) of Rapid City, South Dakota, Justin Hammer (Marla) of Sublette, Janessa Gilbert (Bryon) of Overland Park, and Cody Ausborn (Paige) of Topeka; a brother, John Morris of North Liberty, Iowa; and brother-in-law, Dennis Hill (Georgia) of Sublette.  He is preceded in death by parents; wife, Dvonne; one son, Kent; a grandson, Ryan Ausborn; two brothers, Charles and Paul; and five sisters, Jeannette, Martha, Carolyn, Mary Lou, and Joanne.

Funeral service will be held at Sublette Southern Baptist Church on Friday, December  8, 2023, at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.  Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Sublette on Thursday, December  7, 2023, from noon to 8:00 PM with the family receiving friends from 5-7 PM.  Memorials are suggested to Haskell County EMS, Pride of Life, or the Sublette Fire Department in care of the funeral home.  Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guest book at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.
