Obituary

Lakin - Janene Michell Legg, 54, died September 2, 2024 at Kearney County Hospital in Lakin.  She was born on March 4, 1970 in Garden City, Kansas the daughter of George and Marlene (Clark) Legg.

Janene's childhood years were spent on the family farm near Kalvesta.  She attended Theoni School through the eighth grade and then completed high school in Cimarron, graduating in 1988. Janene went on to further her education at Garden City Community College, where she had a scholarship in band for playing the saxophone.

After earning her Associates Degree, Janene worked in the school lunch room at Garfield in Garden City Kansas. She was a lunch lady, as she would say from lunch lady land, IGF Insurance with her sweet friend, Kris, and as a CNA at the nursing home in Cimarron. When her kids were little, she also worked at the photo shop at Sears where daughter Miranda picked up her passion for photography. She lived her life in southwest Kansas, primarily in Cimarron, Garden City, and finally Lakin. Janene was an accomplished painter, painting many pieces for friends and family. But most importantly, she was a fabulous mother and a grandmother.

Janene is survived by two daughters, Miranda Harris of Lakin and Melynda McDonald of Yazoo City, Mississippi; a brother, Clark Legg of Kalvesta; two sisters, Jaymie Ruder (Brian) of Hays; Stephanie ReQua (Nathan) of Seqwick Kansas; four grandchildren, Bradley and Jyssica Knight from Yazoo City, Mississippi, Vanessa Harris and Nazir Sheridon of Lakin Kansas, many aunts, uncles, and cousins, nieces and nephews (best aunt nene ever!) as well as her sister/friends Nancy, Masa, LaDeana, and Kris and so many she took in as her own along the way. Janene is preceded in death by her parents; her only son, Garth McDonald; and a brother, Clint Legg.
