Dodge City - Vera Jean Swafford, 93, died February 13, 2021 at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City. She was born on October 31, 1927 in Cleveland, Oklahoma the daughter of Everett E. and Oletha (Millis) Sylvester.
In 1932, during the depression, Jean moved with her family to Dodge City. She attended Dodge City schools and graduated from Dodge City High School in 1945. After graduation, Jean attended Business College and worked at Trinity Hospital. On August 4, 1946, she married Bob Swafford. They lived in Ford County and later moved to Hodgeman County where they ran a dairy farm. In 1966, the couple returned to Dodge City and co-owned and operated Swafford Cattle Buying. They later divorced.
Jean enrolled at Dodge City Community College where she was on the President's Honor Roll. She moved to Burlington, Colorado, where she owned and operated the Burlington Flower Shop until 1990. Jean then returned to Dodge City and worked for Ford County Emergency until her retirement.
She was a member of Wilroads Gardens Christian Church of Dodge City and a former member of Toast Masters, 4H, and Southwest Singles.
Jean is survived by four children, Rod Swafford and wife Uarda of Dodge City, Craig Swafford of Liberal, Jeanie Zortman and husband Tony of Dodge City, and Travis Swafford and wife Denise of Purcell, Oklahoma; one sister, Patsy Showalter of Meridian, Idaho; eight grandchildren, Tina Hamilton and husband Bradley, McAlester, Oklahoma, Jodi Badgerow and husband William, DeBolt Alberta, Canada, Todd Swafford and wife Karen, Dodge City, Jaime Norton and husband Chad, Liberal, Mikeala Zortman, Dodge City, Zane Swafford, Lawrence, Cole Swafford and Noah Swafford, Purcell, Oklahoma; five great grandchildren, Wayton Hamilton, Lacee Badgerow, Ryder Badgerow, Bradley Norton, and Brittany Norton; and one great-great grandchild, Brooklyn. She is preceded in death by her parents; one son, Michael Swafford; a daughter-in-law, Terry Swafford; and two siblings, Charles "Bud" Sylvester and Jatta Miller.
Memorial service will be held at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Dodge City on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at 10:30 AM with Mr. Jeff Hiers presiding. Family and friends may watch the service via the funeral home Facebook page. Inurnment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City. There is no visitation as cremation has taken place. Friends may sign the guest book on Friday, February 26, 2021 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the funeral home.
