Cimarron - Jim Hardesty, 91, died May 27, 2018 at The Shepherd's Center in Cimarron. He was born on December 20, 1926 in Ashland, the son of Charles Samuel and Edith Fae (Roberts) Hardesty.
As a child, Jim lived in the Ashland-Englewood area. His family then moved to Greensburg, Dodge City and Meade. Jim graduated from Meade High School in 1945. Shortly after graduation, he was drafted. Jim served in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. After his discharge, Jim returned to Meade where he married Bonnie Keltner on April 30, 1948. They recently celebrated 70 years of marriage. Jim and Bonnie lived in several southwest Kansas towns before settling in Mullinville, where they owned and operated Hardesty IGA grocery store. In 1971, they moved to Cimarron, where Jim was part owner in the Cimarron IGA grocery store. He enjoyed traveling and vacationing with family. In 2011, Jim, along with his son, Steve, and brother, Jack, had the honor and privilege of going on an Honor Flight to Washington DC.
He was a member of the Cimarron United Methodist Church.
Jim is survived by his wife Bonnie of Cimarron; five children, Shari Perkins of Dodge City, Sandy Unruh and husband Steve of Cimarron, Debbie Lee of Garden City, Dee Ann Moran of Douglass, and Steve Hardesty and wife Sandy of Topeka; eight grandchildren; and five great grandchildren with one soon to arrive. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jack; son-in-law, Terry Perkins; and great granddaughter, Emma Grace Unruh.
Memorial service will be held at Cimarron United Methodist Church on Saturday June 2, 2018 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Mike Keating presiding. Military Honors will be provided by KSARNG. There is no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to Kansas Honor Flight, The Shepherd's Center, American Cancer Society, or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in care of Swaim Funeral Chapel – 1901 6 th Ave – Dodge City, Kansas 67801.
