Joan Eileen (Smith) Edmonston Calhoun, 80, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at Good Samaritan Center in Dodge City. She was born on April 7, 1929 in Wichita, the daughter of Joe R. and Grace (Phelan) Smith.
Joan was raised in Montezuma, graduating from Montezuma High School in 1947. She then attended and graduated from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in 1955. She married Don Edmonston of Protection. They later divorced. She married Alton B. Calhoun on November 1, 1976 in Dodge City. He preceded her in death on August 17, 1993. Joan worked as an R.N. for many area hospitals, including those in Coldwater, Ashland, Meade, Minneola, and Dogde City. She was the school nurse at Richland Valley where she also taught art. Joan loved bowling, baseball, music, and fishing. After Alton's death, Joan traveled the U.S wintering in Texas and returning to Dodge City in the summer until her health no longer allowed it.
She was a member of Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City; Dodge City Women's Bowling Association, past president of Business and Professional Women Association, Ashland; a Charter Member of the Dodge City Council on Aging; and a Marine Corps Key Volunteer, which served to support the families of deployed members.
Joan is survived by her son, Mark J. Edmonston and wife Linda of Sacramento, California; one grandson, Alex Edmonston and two granddaughters, Amber Edmonston and Audrey Edmonston, all of Sacramento, California. She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Alton.
Vigil service will be held at Cathedral Of Our Lady Of Guadalupe, Dodge City, on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 7:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be held at the Cathedral Of Our Lady Of Guadalupe, Dodge City, on Friday April 24, 2009 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Ted Skalsky presiding. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Montezuma. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City on Thursday, April 23, 2009 from noon to 5:00 PM.
