Joe Roger Alvarez 83 passed from this life to heaven on Thursday, October 8th, 2026 at the Kansas Soldiers' Home in Fort Dodge. Joe was proud to have been a lifelong resident of Dodge City, born at St Anthony's on March 17th, 1943 to Nellie Manuela (Alvarez) Sanchez.
Joe was a devoted husband to his wife Mary (Falcon) Alvarez. They married on May 9th, 1970. They enjoyed 48 loving years together before Mary preceded him to heaven in 2018. They were faithful parishioners at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, where Joe was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus. Joe enlisted and served in the US Army in Korea, trained as a medic. He worked and retired from a career at Farmland Industries. He loved the outdoors; fishing, camping, golfing and softball in younger years and later always cheering for his teams K-State, KC Chiefs and Royals.
He was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dodge City and Howard Gotschall Post #1714 of Dodge City.
Joe is survived by two sons: John Alvarez and wife Joy Evelyn of Kansas City, Missouri; David Alvarez and wife Genny of Wamego; three grandchildren: Aaron Cole Alvarez; Adrian Josiah Alvarez; and Brittany Miller, mother of six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his five brothers: Felix Sanchez and wife Nina; Jerry Sanchez and wife Linda; Henry Sanchez; Carlos Sanchez; Fred Sanchez and wife Janet.
The Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, October 14, 2026 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 13, 2026 from 1:00 to 7:00 PM at Swaim funeral Chapel with a Vigil service starting at 7:00 PM. Burial will follow at Greencrest Cemetery in Dodge City. Memorial donations can be made to Sacred Heart School Building Fund in care of the funeral home. Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guestbook at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.
