Montezuma - Joe L. Bruington, 97, died January 5, 2014 at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City. He was born on June 29, 1916 in rural Meade County, the son of Fred and Florence (Reynolds) Bruington.
He graduated from Meade High School in 1934. Joe married Opal Marie Reinert on Oct 1, 1938 in Ashland. She preceded him in death on September 2, 2001. After their marriage, they moved to the farm south of Montezuma where he resided ever since. Joe farmed and ranched all of his life. He enjoyed his family and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was a member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church and the Sons of the American Revolution. Joe served on the Montezuma School Board and the Montezuma Credit Union Board. He was also the Sunday school superintendant for the church.
Joe is survived by one son, Larry Bruington and wife Joy of Upland, California; one daughter, Judy Gall and husband Emil of Dodge City; two grandchildren; four step grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and six step great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; step father, John Miller; three brothers, Fred, Reynolds, and Rolla Bruington; and two sisters, Helen Murray and Ethel Kobs.
Funeral service will be held at Montezuma United Methodist Church on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Jerry Odle presiding. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Montezuma. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel of Montezuma on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 from noon to 8:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to Montezuma United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.
