Obituary

Dodge City - John Ellis Armstrong, 72, died April 5, 2014 at The Shepherd's Center, Cimarron.   He was born on September 21, 1941 at Middletown, Ohio, the son of Donald and Delma (Ellis) Armstrong.

On May 22, 1964 he married Vicky Oakes in Dodge City.

John was the head women's basketball coach at St. Mary of The Plains College for several years, where he won the KCAC Championship five consecutive years. He also won the NAIA Championship four years and was named coach of the year for five years. John coached and taught at Dodge City High School for six years. Mr. Armstrong coached and taught for a few years at Garden City Community College, where he lead the Broncbusters to a Western Division Jayhawk Conference title in 1991. He also lead them to a Region 6 Tournament Championship, the first ever in school history. John also coached GCCC at the National JUCO Tournament in Tyler, Texas in 1991. He was the women's head coach at Dodge City Community College for one year. Mr. Armstrong also taught at Minneola, Dodge City and other high schools around the state. John was also the co-owner of A&A exterminating in Dodge City.

He was a member of the Dodge City Church of the Nazarene.

John is survived by his wife Vicky Armstrong of the home; two sons John Armstrong Jr. and wife Dawniel of   Dodge City and Dr. David Armstrong and wife Dr. Phuc of San Antonio,Texas; four grandchildren, Ryan, Madison, Aspen and Max Armstrong; and two fur kids, Coal and Mandy; two brothers, Richard and Don Armstrong; and one sister, Donna Armstrong.

Memorial service will be held at Cavalier Field on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 12:00 PM with Rev. Michael Burns presiding. The family would like to invite everyone to join them after the service for a ball park picnic at Cavalier Field, if you would like to bring a side dish please call the Dodge City Church of the Nazarene at 225-5835.   There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to the Sterling College Women's Basketball Program or Dodge City Church of The Nazarene both in care of the funeral home.
