DODGE CITY - John William Jones was born October 20, 1919 in Dodge City, Kansas and died at Marley House Hospice in Prescott, Arizona on December 22, 2012. He was the eighth child and third son of Ansel Cedrick Jones and Cecil Mae (Root) Jones. He was raised in Dodge City during the depression and the dust storms of the 1930s. He graduated the class of 1939. He loved sports participating in football, track and boxing. He went on to Dodge City Junior College where he played football and met the love of his life, Ethel Marie (Pat) Sharp. John joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 serving three and a half years. Part of his flight training brought him to Prescott, Arizona where he would later settle with his family. John worked as a trainman for the Santa Fe Railroad for forty years. He loved raising horses and dogs, his companions. John and Pat Sharp were married August 15, 1945 in Ovid, New York. Three children were born of this union in Dodge City, Kansas. John and Pat ran the Baskin Robbins ice cream store on Gurley Street for twenty three years.
John is survived by his wife Pat, son Don Jones of Ft. Morgan, Colorado; daughters Janet (Mike) Konkel of Kersey, Colorado and Becky (Don) Adams of Chino Valley, Arizona; granddaughters Carrie Jones, Erin (Curtis) Sidwell, Sara (Travis) Arp, Beth (Keith) Foss all of Colorado; and grandsons Tyler, Billy and Andy Adams of Arizona; great-grandchildren Georgia Lenhardt, and twins Addy and Braiden Sidwell.
John was preceded in death by his parents, all his siblings and one granddaughter Jennifer Dawn Jones. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be sent to Stepping Stones Agencies at 6719 E. 2nd Street Suite A, Prescott Valley, Arizona 86314 or Marley House Hospice, 1063 Ruth Street, Prescott, Arizona 86301 in John's name.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 A.M. Saturday December 29, 2012 at the Chino Valley United Methodist Church in Chino Valley, Arizona with Rev. Bob Kemp and Rev. Don Benton officiating. Graveside services will be held January 2, 2013 at Greencrest Memorial Gardens in Dodge City, Kansas with Rev. Dick Robbins officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Howard Gotschall Post #1714, V.F.W. There will be no visitation in Dodge City.
