Satanta - John E. Keener, 74, died June 19, 2014 at the Satanta District Hospital, Satanta. He was born on August 20, 1939 in LaCrosse, the son of Glen Edward and Virginia (Maresch) Keener.
John's early years were spent near LaCrosse. He attended school in Nekoma. The family then moved to Kismet and then to Mullinville in 1955. John graduated from Mullinville High School. On October 1, 1957, he joined the United States Air Force. He served until May of 1962. On June 25, 1960, he married Shirley Woolery, sharing nearly 54 years of marriage. After his discharge, they moved to Mullinville and then to Cullison in 1965. In 1966, they moved to Wichita where John worked as an aircraft mechanic for Boeing and Cesna. In 1968, the family moved to Cheney where John started working in the grain industry. John moved the family to Satanta in 1977 when he took a job as grain manager for the Satanta COOP. He retired in 2000. John was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing. His family was also an important part of his life. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was a member of the Satanta Methodist Church, Satanta Lions Club, Men of ESA, Cimarron Valley Golf Course, and the Satanta Chamber.
John is survived by his wife, Shirley Keener of Satanta; three daughters, Caren Willis and husband Terry of Runaway Bay, Texas, Carla Darbro and husband Frank of El Dorado; and Carmen Keener of Satanta; three brothers, Jay Keener and wife Sandy of Wichita, Lee Keener and wife Judy of Derby, and James Keener of Wichita; seven grandchildren, Tammy Darbro, Bradley, Brenden and Braden Pankey, Jarid Spain, Janna Anderson, and Sydney Larkins; and six great grandchildren, Jacob, Corey, Kambreigh, Gabriel, Abby, and Brantley. He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Gary Keener.
Funeral service will be held at Satanta United Methodist Church on Monday, June 23, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Kelvin Heitmann presiding. Burial will follow at Dudley Township Cemetery in Satanta. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel of Sublette on Sunday, June 22, 2014 from noon to 6:00 P.M.. Memorials are suggested to Cimarron Valley Golf Course in care of the funeral home.
