SUBLETTE - Katherine Carol Birney, 74, died September 29, 2012 at Applewood Our House, Golden, Colorado. She was born on December 11, 1937 at Erick, Oklahoma, the daughter of Everet Charlie and Dolly (Gilchrist) Files.

She married Roy Max Birney on July 26, 1957 in Orange Cove, California. He survives. They moved to Garden City in 1979. Carol was a secretary in the Garden City School District for 18 years. She enjoyed traveling, knitting, and playing tennis.

In addition to her husband, Carol is survived by two sons, Gregory Earl Birney of Golden, Colorado and Russell Dale Birney of Boulder, Colorado; one brother, Charles Files and wife Mary of Bakersfield, California; two sisters, Sharlene Huncovsky and husband Warren of West Covina, California and Joyce Duzac and husband Louis of Santa Clara, California; two grandchildren, Geoffrey David Birney and Roy Matthew Birney and wife Claudia; and two great grandchildren Benjamin and Braden. She is preceded in death by her parents.

Graveside service will be held at Haskell County Cemetery in Sublette on Friday, October 5, 2012 at 2:00 PM with Pastor David Erwin presiding. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel of Sublette on Thursday, October 4, 2012 from noon to 8:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice in care of the funeral home.
