Montezuma - Kathryn (Katie) Schmidt, 90, of Montezuma passed away January 4, 2023. She was born on March 6, 1932 in Hitchcock to Joseph and Mary (Schmidt) Eck. She married Franklin J. Schmidt on November 18, 1947.

Kathryn was raised in Hitchcock and Ringwood, Oklahoma during the great depression. She moved to Montezuma and lived with her father while he worked and her mother stayed in Ringwood with the other siblings. Kathryn worked at Montgomery Wards until they closed and then at the South and North Dillons stores in Dodge City for years.

Kathryn is survived by her three sons, Donald Ray Schmidt, Gary Lynn Schmidt, and wife Brenda, and Terrance Jay Schmidt; seven grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Franklin; a daughter, Carla Denise Schmidt; four sisters, Susie Engle, Elizabeth Eck, Eva Nightengale, and Leona Nusz; and a brother, Henry Eck.

Kathryn was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was the rock of the family.

Funeral service will be held at Montezuma Mennonite Church on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at Montezuma Mennonite Cemetery. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Montezuma on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 from noon to 5:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to the family in care of the funeral home.
