IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Kay Lynn
West
May 31, 1939 – November 3, 2023
Dodge City - Kay Lynn West, 84, died November 3, 2023 at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains, Dodge City. She was born on May 31, 1939 at Dodge City, the daughter of Andy and Emma Wynona (Zirkle) West.
Kay grew up in Dodge City and inherited her love of horse racing from her father. She spent many springs and summers training and racing horses across the Midwest, one of the few women horse trainers in her time. Later in life she turned to raising goats, at first for meat, than later raising registered goats for sales and 4H shows.
She was fiercely independent, always spoke her mind, and remained active up until her final months. Kay loved to follow her son's fantasy football teams, never hesitating to question a decision about players he selected or traded for. She loved watching sports, following the Kansas City Chiefs and the Wichita State Shockers basketball team. She will be missed by those her knew her.
Kay is survived by her son, Andy R. West, Jr. and wife Tammy; granddaughter, Callie West, step grandson, Tedman Schinstock and wife Anna, and 4 step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Andy and Wynona West, a son, Nick Gordon and step grandson, Tanner.
Private family graveside service will be held at a later date at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City. There will be no public visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Prairie or United Way both in care of the funeral home. Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guest book at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.
