Larry Ray Mayfield, 65, died Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Robert J Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita. He was born on April 24, 1944 in Dodge City, the son of Virgil S. and Ima Gene (Winsor) Mayfield.
Larry graduated from Dodge City High School and Dodge City Communtiy College. He then attended Fort Hays State University until he enlisted in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. After returning from the war, he farmed and raised horses with his dad. He worked various jobs in Dodge City, most recently working at National Beef. After retiring from there, he enjoyed attending many auctions and collecting coins.
He was a lifetime member of Howard Gotschall Post #1714 V.F.W.
Larry is survived by his mother, Ima Gene Mayfield of Dodge City, four sisters, Wanda Morris and husband Jerry of Burleson, Texas, Janet Billings and husband Carl of Liberal, Terry Swafford and husband Craig of Liberal, and Tammie Simon and husband Steve of Dodge City; six nieces; and six nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Virgil Mayfield.
Graveside service will be held at Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Ft. Dodge on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at 2:00 PM with Mr. Anthony Lyons presiding. Military rites will be provided by Howard Gotschall Post #1714 V.F.W. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home in Dodge City on Monday, June 1, 2009 from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM. and on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 from 9:00 A.M. to noon.
