Obituary

Montezuma - Laura Powell, 88, died October 16, 2021 at The Shepherd's Center in Cimarron. She was born on November 1, 1932 on the family farm north of Montezuma, the daughter of Emil and Eva (Koehn) Koehn.

Laura attended Montezuma schools, completing the eighth grade. She later completed her GED and attended Dodge City Community College. Laura moved to El Paso, Texas where she worked for the school district in food service. She returned to Montezuma and was the Stop2Shop store manager, the Montezuma Senior Center cook and coordinator. Laura also owned and operated Laura's Kitchen out of her home, making a variety of homemade food. She enjoyed gardening. Laura always had a large vegetable garden as well as larger flower garden.

She was a member of Morningside Church in Montezuma.

Laura is survived by three children, Glen Powell and wife Caprice of Montezuma, Patricia Cox and husband Roger of Norman, Oklahoma, and Bobby Powell and wife Cheryl of Exeter, Missouri; a step daughter, Beverly Deeds and husband Bob of Santa Fe, New Mexico; a sister, Wanda Schmidt of Montezuma; two brothers, Rodney Koehn of Montezuma and Eldon Koehn and wife Jeanette of Montezuma; 11 grandchildren, Nicholas Powell, Tori Powell, Madilyn Schafer, Cole Schafer, Eric Gibson, Jason Gibson, Steven Gibson, Angie Gibson, Jaylon Cox, Bobby Baker, and Mick Deeds, and several great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, five siblings, Wilbur Koehn, Russell Koehn, Rosalee Koehn, Vera Schmidt, and Jolene Burns; and a grandson, Terry Gene Baker.

Graveside service will be held at Morningside Cemetery, Montezuma on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Tim Erickson presiding. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Montezuma on Monday, October 18, 2021 from noon to 8:00 PM. A Celebration of Laura's life will be held at a later date.
