Spearville – Lawrence "Larry" James Hornung, 72, died January 9, 2024 at Hays Medical Center. He was born on October 5, 1951 in Spearville, the son of Andrew James and Elsie Elnora (Allen) Hornung.
Larry was a lifetime resident of Spearville, graduating from Spearville High School in 1969. After graduation, he went to work for a local farmer before starting to farm for himself. About that same time, Larry began working for Crust Buster/Speed King and was an integral part in their growth for over 40 years. On May 15, 1971, Larry was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Klenke. Together they made a home in Spearville for their three sons, Kyle, Brad, and Bill.
Larry enjoyed fishing, gardening, and watching sports. He loved to mow lawns for his family and friends. He was an avid K-State fan. Above all, Larry loved his family. He enjoyed following his sons' school activities and later the adventures of his grandchildren.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus #1539 both of Spearville.
Larry is survived by three sons, Kyle Hornung (Kimberly Coates) of Olathe, Brad Hornung (Christie Oldham) of Spearville, and Bill Hornung (Charity) of Albert; two sisters, Roberta Kiehl of Spearville and Elizabeth Hornung of Jetmore; nine grandchildren, Keegan Hornung of Lincoln, Nebraska, Karlynn Hornung of Wichita, Austin Hornung of Spearville, Blake Hornung of Spearville, McKinnley Kolbeck of Spearville, Tony Kearns of Spearville, Kaden Muth of Albert, Addison Coates of Olathe, and Mason Coates of Olathe. He is preceded in death by parents; wife, Mary Elizabeth Hornung; a brother, Charles Michael Hornung; and a sister, Rose Marie Hornung.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Spearville on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at 10:00 AM with Rev. John Forkuoh presiding. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Spearville. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, from noon to 5:00 PM. Vigil service will be at 7:00 PM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Spearville. Memorials are suggested to Southwind at Spearville, Spearville Lancers Booster Club, or HaysMed Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute in care of the funeral home.
