Obituary

Fort Dodge-Leda was born to Paul and Marion Campbell of Owego, New York on February 3, 1943. She was the middle child with an older sister, Sabra, and a younger brother, Paul. She died March 25, 2023 at the Kansas Soldiers Home at Fort Dodge, reaching the age of 80 years.

Leda graduated from Cortland College with a Bachelor in Education where she met her husband, Jim Brown. As an Army spouse with a husband going to war, she became the primary emotional and advisory support for multiple military families while still raising her two toddlers. Throughout her life, she was a mother to all, the consummate team player, exhibiting the ability to function behind the scenes and help people be their best.

Leda's strength of character and ability to make people comfortable carried the family through more than fifty moves across three continents. This ability to connect and make people feel at home was the gift that made her and her husband probably the best unofficial international ambassadors for the U.S. Her career began with teaching High School students, transitioned to teaching Soldiers to get their diplomas and grew from there. As her husband transitioned to a career with Army Sports, she focused on supporting Soldiers. These Soldiers called her "Mom," a moniker that continued to be used by many of the people she met and cared for throughout her life. Through supporting the administration of countless track meets, wrestling events, and a myriad of other sporting competitions, she left a legacy of bringing 'home' to the Soldiers who were away from home. She was the ultimate mother.

Her career of teaching and nurturing extended throughout their moves eventually concluding with retirement as the Director of the Fort Benning Child Care facility. Her association with and support of the military lasted for over 50 years. Through her life, she facilitated a connection to worldwide communities including having supported athletes and officials at two Olympics and several world championships. She and her husband sponsored international Military Officers who were attending schools at Fort Benning.

Leda's love of travel had her visiting over 40 countries in her lifetime. She learned both conversational German and some Korean, all in support of the family. Her relationships spanned the globe. She is remembered for her support, affable nature, vitality, smile, infectious laugh, her love of games, love of reading and baking, and love of family.

Leda is survived by her sons Will (Amie), Joe (Sharon) and Grandchildren, Jeffery (Melissa), Raven, Nicholas ( Haley), Gavin, Molly, and Candace.
