Obituary

Leo Eugene Leonard, 90, died May 8, 2011 at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains in Dodge City. He was born on December 31, 1920 in Ray, the son of Guy E. and Grace (VanValkenburg) Leonard.

Leo, a friend to everyone, graduated from Dodge City High School in 1939 and then attended Dodge City Community College. He married Jessie Arlene Winger on March 31, 1940 in Dodge City. She preceded him in death on January 25, 1988. Mr. Leonard served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 and received a Purple Heart in The European Theater of Operations in World War II. Leo was employed by the US Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for twenty seven years. An amateur boxer in his youth, Leo also loved waterskiing, playing pool, and had bowled for over fifty years.

Mr. Leonard was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dodge City, a lifetime member of Howard Gotschall Post #1714 VFW, American Legion Posts in Dodge City and Kansas City, DAV Moose Lodge of Dodge City and various other organizations.

He is survived by one son, Leo Eugene Leonard, Jr. of Prairie Village; one daughter, Lynett Lallement of Littleton, Colorado; one brother, Wayne Leonard of Amarillo, Texas; along with six grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by his son, Jeffery and three brothers, Joe, Bernard, and Dean.

Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Home in Dodge City on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Dick Robbins presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City with military graveside rites by Howard Gotschall Post #1714 V.F.W. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Friday, May 13, 2011 from noon to 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Ford County Humane Society or the Dodge City Animal Shelter in care of the funeral home.
