Dodge City - Leonard E. Cartmill, 86, died December 14, 2014 at Western Plains Medical Complex, Dodge City. He was born on December 28, 1927 at Blencoe, Iowa.
Mr. Cartmill was a veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1946 until 1949. He married Bettie Bienroth Guenthner in October of 1978. She preceded him in death on April 8, 1992. A Dodge City resident for many years, he was employed as a truck driver for High Plains Dressed Beef, Dodge City. Mr. Cartmill enjoyed watching car races, and in particular, assisting the drivers. He raced cars himself in his early years. He greatly enjoyed his trips to see family in Texas. He was an active member of the Howard Gotschall Post # 1714, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Dodge City, and was very proud of his years of service to his country.
Survivors include two sons, Mark Guenthner and wife Debbie, Borger, Texas; Tony Guenthner and wife Dawn, Angel Fire, New Mexico; two daughters, Pam Powell and husband Jerry, Minneola, Trudi Adams and husband Tim, Ransom Canyon, Texas; six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery, Fort Dodge, Kansas, on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Dick Robbins presiding. Military rites will be provided by the Howard Gotschall Post # 1714, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the KSARNG, both of Dodge City. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 from 12:00 P.M. to 5:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to Howard Gotschall Post # 1714, VFW, Dodge City, Kansas, 67801, in care of the funeral home.
