LEONARD L. "GRANDPA" WOODS

Dodge City - Leonard L. "Grandpa" Woods, 86, died November 23, 2014 at his residence in Dodge City. He was born on October 21, 1928 at Cimarron, the son of Rufus Milton and Ruby Eleanor (Friedlund) Woods.

Leonard was a long time resident of Kalvesta and attended schools in Kalvesta and Cimarron. He served with the U.S. Navy from April 2, 1946 thru October 21, 1949 and was in the U.S. Naval Reserves thru 1953. He was stationed at Port Wynemee, California and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. After the service he lived most of his life in Kalvesta before coming to Dodge City. He was a rural mail carrier, school bus driver, member of the Kalvesta School Board, horse trader, had a harvest crew and worked at Kalvesta Implement. On January 20, 1948 he married Emily Thomas. She survives.

He enjoyed taking his kids to rodeos, buying and selling horses and coyote hunting. He especially loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was a member of the Cimarron Church of the Nazarene of Cimarron.

Leonard is survived by his wife Emily Woods, Dodge City, a son Darrell (Connie) Woods, Kalvesta; four daughters, Ruby Beatty, Dodge City, Margie (Dale) Cunningham, Dodge City, Judy (Dan) Stand, Cimarron and Darlene (Rick) Dyson, Hydro, Oklahoma; 20 grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren; daughter in law, Jane Woods, Fort Worth, Texas; extended family, Steve (Shirley) Woods, Talihina, Oklahoma, Harold (Sara) Kennington, Ingalls, and Tommy Jay, Wichita; three brothers, Rufus (Ramona) Woods, Jr., Cimarron, Wilford (Shirley) Woods, Kalvesta and Ben (Alicia) Woods, Cimarron; two sisters, Linda (Mike) Rankin, Dodge City and Glenda O'Bleness, Weatherford, Oklahoma; sister in law Karlene (Jerry) Koehn, Cimarron; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son "Doc" Woods, a grandson, Cody Woods, a great granddaughter, Maddison Cunningham, a sister, Vivian Bridgewater and three brothers, Larry Lee, Butch and Judd Woods.

Memorial services will be held at Cimarron Church of the Nazarene on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. with Pastors Tom Boese and Rick Dyson presiding. Burial will be at a later date in Cimarron Cemetery, Cimarron. There will be no public visitation as cremation has taken place.
