JAMES L. "Jim" BIRZER
Dodge City - James L. "Jim" Birzer, 80, died July 28, 2014 at his home in Dodge City following a lengthy illness. He was born on April 7, 1934 at Dodge City, the son of Frank B. and Mollie M. Schiffner Birzer.

Jim graduated from Dodge City High School. After high school he joined the United States Air Force, where he served six years. After he returned from the service, he worked at the Dodge City Coop. He later went to work for the Sunflower Power Company on Fort Dodge Road, where he worked until he retired.

He was a member of the Howard Gotschall Post # 1714, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Senior Friends, both of Dodge City.

Survivors include four brothers, John R. Birzer and wife Phyllis, Ottawa, Kansas, Leo L. Birzer and wife Lou, Wichita, Edward A. Birzer and wife Louise, Chula Vista, California; Lawrence L. Birzer, Meridian, Mississippi; two sisters, Mary A. "Dolly" Herron, Cimarron, and Elsie C. McComas, Dodge City, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Frank, Fred, and Albert Birzer, and two sisters, Alma Talley and Helen Carrier.

Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Home on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. with Mr. David Johnson presiding. Burial will follow at St. Andrew's Cemetery in Wright, with military rites provided by the Howard Gotschall Post # 1714, V.F.W. and KSARNG military honors, both of Dodge City. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Friday, August 1, 2014 from 12:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice in care of the funeral home.
