MONTEZUMA - Lillian Voth was born on November 24, 1920 in rural Gray County, near Montezuma. She passed from this life to eternal life on November 9, 2013. She reached the age of 92 years, 11 months, and 16 days. She married Henry Voth on December 6, 1945. This marriage was blessed with two sons, Allen and Richard Voth.
Mom lived the first 85 years of her life in the Montezuma community. She was a homemaker, worked for Irvin and Genieve Marrs as a grocery store clerk, and as a bookkeeper and secretary for Alvin B. Koehn Automotive Service in Montezuma. She retired from the Ingalls School system in 1989 where she served as a school secretary and board treasurer. Lillian also served as secretary and treasurer for the Montezuma Senior Center. In 2005, she became ill and could not return to her home. At that time, she lived in managed care near her son Allen.
She was a member of the First Missionary Church of Dodge City.
Her two sons, Allen Voth and wife Kay of Overland Park and Richard Voth of Chico, Texas survive Lillian. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Lorri Voth Baker and husband Caleb and Brent Voth all of Olathe; a sister-in-law, Marcella Nightengale, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry in June of 1989; her parents, Andrew J. and Mary (Wedel) Nightengale; step-mother, Matilda Nightengale; five brothers, Emanuel, Rudolph, Albin, Ewald, and Jonas Nightengale; and two sisters, Katie Nightengale and Bertha Penner.
Mom was a fighter and survivor. She survived colon cancer, two hip replacements, hernia surgery, back surgery, and numerous other health issues. Her death was a result of complications from Alzheimer's disease. Mom's first focus in life was her relationship with her Lord and Savior. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior as a young teen. Her goal in life was to serve Him the very best she could. She served as a Vacation Bible School and Sunday School teacher. Lillian taught young children, teens, and adults. She opened her home to after school Bible clubs to both high school and elementary age children. Lillian was very active in Child Evangelism and was a gifted teacher. Education was important to her and she actively encouraged both of her sons to get a college education. While she never had the opportunity to attend formal high school, she did complete her GED and took business classes at Salt City Business School in Hutchinson. She enjoyed numbers and the challenges of accounting. Mom was a faithful and devoted wife and a loving mother and grandmother. As a cook, within the family, she was best known for her fried chicken and cinnamon rolls. She found great joy in her grandchildren. While we will miss her, we are happy in the faith that she is with her Lord and now enjoys restored health.
