LLOYD P. HOLMES

Dodge City - Lloyd P. Holmes, 84, died March 28, 2011 at Rolling Hills Assisted Living in Topeka. He was born on January 20, 1927 in Ness County, the son of George and Rose (Beye) Holmes.

Lloyd grew up on the family farm in Ness County. He graduated from Bazine High School in 1945. Lloyd served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On August 8, 1948, he married Marguerite Washaliski in McCracken. She preceded him in death on January 16, 2010. Lloyd owned and operated Lloyd Holmes Auto Sales in Dodge City for over 30 years.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Dodge City.

Survivors include two sons, Kent Holmes and wife Cathy of Topeka, and Todd Holmes and wife Jodi of Montezuma; a daughter-in-law, Karen Holmes of Greenville, Texas; four grandsons, Brian Holmes and wife Gloria of Garland, Texas, David Holmes of Greenville, Texas, Nicholas Holmes of Pasadena, California, and Grant Holmes of Lawrence; one brother, Melvin Holmes of Garden City; two sisters, Vi Smith of Garden City and Georgia McDonald of Salina; and many nieces and nephews. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, wife, oldest son, Alan Holmes, three brothers, John, Carl and Perry Holmes, and four sisters, Edna Talbot, Opal Cannon, Mary Long, and Irene Cunningham.

Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Home in Dodge City on Friday, April 1, 2011 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Dick Robbins presiding. Burial will be at 2:30 PM, Friday, April 1, 2011 at the McCracken Cemetery in McCracken with Rev. Eugene Beye presiding with military rites by the American Legion Post #59. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Thursday, March 31, 2011 from noon to 8:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to Rolling Hills Assisted Living of Topeka in care of the funeral home.
