Obituary

Montezuma-Lorene (Unruh) Nichols, our dear sister was born to Lincoln and Elda Unruh on August 18, 1925, with the help of Grandma Lena in Haskell County, Kansas. She peacefully passed one week from her ninety-seventh birthday in Bethel Home, Montezuma, Kansas.

Lorene had a wonderful childhood with her twin sister Irene and siblings. They enjoyed playing hop scotch and making mud pies. How exciting it was for her to start school at six years of age in the new Colusa School. She completed her eight years of education there. She met the Lord when she was thirteen years of age and was baptized on January 31, 1939, into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite by Minister Harry Wenger. She was faithful to her vows unto the end. In her teen years, she was busy helping others. She would often leave home early in the week and not return until the end.

Lorene met Abe Nichols, the love of her life, and was married November 5, 1944, by Vernon Nightengale along with Irene and her husband, Paul Koehn. After marriage, they immediately went to Black Hills, South Dakota, for Christian Public Service. They served other places also. On returning from CPS, Abe and Lorene lived in John Wedel's basement. Lorene was a faithful mother and homemaker and did much to help Abe in the different locations where they lived. She love quilting, gardening, and making pies.

While living in the sand hills, a precious gift named Connie entered their life. She came to them at the age of four. She filled their life with much joy along with challenges. As Connie grew older, she was very appreciative of all the things Abe and Lorene did for her.

In 1976, Abe and Lorene moved closer to Copeland and built a house by Highway 144. On December 1 of 1988, Lorene suffered a deep loss in losing her husband Abe to a stroke. She also lost her daughter Connie on January 18, 2022.

She is survived by her twin sister, Irene of Bethel Home, siblings, Leslie Unruh of Copeland, Kansas; Celesta Koehn (Clarence), Norman Unruh, Nora Friesen, all of Brooksville, Mississippi; Charles Unruh of Ulysses, Kansas; Delbert Unruh (Lillian), of Scio, Oregon; Ladean Nightengale (Kenneth), of Montezuma, Kansas; Geneva Nightengale of Brooksville, Mississippi; Arnold Unruh of Copeland, Kansas; Berniece Koehn of Copeland, Kansas; sisters-in-law, Irene Unruh (Ezra) of Montezuma, Kansas; Bertha Unruh (Orlan) of Derby, Kansas; Fern Unruh (Gary) of Copeland, Kansas; and a host of nieces and nephews, whom she loved. She is preceded in death by her parents, Lincoln and Elda, her husband, Abe, her daughter Connie, her brothers Marvin, Ezra, Orlan, Gary, her sister Elsie, sisters-in-law Juanita, Gertrude, Maurene, Pauline, Norma, brothers-in-law Leslie, Paul, and Elton.

The family would like to especially thank Bethel Home for all the loving care given to Lorene in her later years.
