Louis Anthony Hurtig, 89, died Thursday, March 26, 2009 at Wesley Hospital in Wichita, KS. He was born October 3, 1919 in Hanover, KS, the third of six children, to Dr. Henry George Hurtig and Anna M. (Bestak) Hurtig. He attended St. John's Catholic grade school in Hanover. After graduating from Hanover High School, he attended St. John's military Academy in Hays, KS. He graduated in 1943 from Kansas State College with a BS degree, and then attended Catholic University of Washington D.C. Graduate School. Louis worked there as a veteran's counselor from 1945-1950. He and Marian Ober of Minneapolis, KS, were married September 15, 1946 in Concordia, KS. After living in Washington D.C. and Oklahoma City, OK, the couple moved to Dodge City. There they raised their family. They were active members of Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish and School. Louis was also a member of Knights of Columbus and a charter member of the Optimist Club. In Dodge City he worked as a professional representative for Merck-Sharp and Dohme Pharmaceutical Company. After enjoying several years of retirement in Dodge, the couple moved to Wichita in 2004 to be near their son. Louis was preceded in death by an infant son, Lawrence Anthony Hurtig, brother, Henry Hurtig and sisters, Margaret Loch, Clare Peeso, Eunice Hurtig and Rosemarie Rinner. He is survived by his wife, Marian; his children, Louis Anthony "Tony", Jr., and wife, Kim of Wichita and Mary Louise (Hurtig) Smith and husband, Walynn of Cheyenne, WY; grandchildren, Bryan, Shane and Lara Anne Smith of Colorado and Heidi and Andy Hurtig of Wichita.. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, April 1 at Cathedral Of Our Lady of Guadalupe with Rev. Ted A. Skalsky presiding. Vigil Service will be 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 31, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Cathedral. Burial will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to Dodge City Optimist Club or to Cathedral of Our Lady Of Guadalupe both in care of Swaim Funeral Home, 1901 6th Ave. Dodge City, Kansas 67801.
