Obituary

Lt. Commander Leslie Sue Turley (Retired), 56, passed away Monday evening, September 21, 2009, at Good Samaritan Center in Dodge City. She was born on September 19, 1953 in Dodge City, to William Eugene and Melva Deane (Railing) Turley. On August 12, 1974, she married Roger L. Falk. They later divorced. On November 23, 1999, she married Steven L. Kurtz.

Leslie graduated from Dodge City High School and Dodge City Community College. In November of 1979, she enlisted in the United States Navy. She was selected for the Enlisted Commissioned Program in 1982 and graduated from the University of Kansas before being commisssioned an Ensign in October of 1984 after completing Officer Candidate School. She served two tours of duty at the Pentagon and then served as Administrative Dept. Head at the Naval Support Facility, Diego Garcia. She then earned a Master's degree in Management from the Naval Post Graduate School and a Master's degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. Leslie served at the Naval Recruiting District Denver. She assumed command of the Amarillo MEPS in November of 1997 before retiring in 2000. She loved her family and spent as much time with them as possible since her retirement.

Leslie is survived by her mother, Melva Deane Turley of Dodge City; one brother, Bill Turley and wife Sheri of Dodge City; two sisters, Geni Stanley of Dodge City and Robyn Fralick and husband Kevin of Dodge City. She is also survived by 10 nieces and nephews and eight great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, William E. Turley and one nephew, Blake Christopher Stanley.

Funeral service will be held at Dodge City Church of the Nazarene on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Michael Burns presiding. Entombment will follow at Scroggins Mausoleum in Dodge City with Military Rites by the United States Navy. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, on Friday, September 25, 2009 from noon to 8:00 PM. Memorials can be made to the Good Samaritan Center or Histoplasmosis Research in care of the funeral home. Personal Condolences may be left at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.
