Satanta - Lucille J. Simpson, 97, died September 25, 2013 at Satanta Long Term Care in Satanta. She was born on August 15, 1916 in Ensign, the daughter of Isaac "Bert" and Katie Mae (Campbell) Snyder.
She lived in Ensign, Fowler, Meade, and Cimarron before coming to Satanta in 1938. She and Forrest Simpson were married on September 7, 1932 in Ashland. They shared 74 years of marriage before his death on December 4, 2006.
Lucille was a housewife of a farmer and an involved member of her community. She remained a member of the Satanta Chamber of Commerce and the Satanta Arts Council until the time of her death. Lucille was also a member of the LDS church, but a faithful supporter of the Satanta Methodist Church. Lucille was a charter member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service established in September of 1940 where she served as both president and treasurer. She taught Sunday school for many years and served on various committees at the UMC. Lucille was a lifetime member of the Kansas Parents and Teachers and a charter member and leader of the Satanta Go Getters 4-H Club established in 1947. She was a former member of the Satanta Riding & Roping Club, Square Dance Caller, Santee Club, Stitch and Chatter Club, and Haskell County Women's Bowling League.
Lucille is survived by a daughter, Katherine D. Andrews and husband Kenneth and a son Mearle Simpson and wife Ila, all of Satanta. She is also survived by a brother, Gene Snyder of Golden, Colorado; three grandchildren, Debbie Weeks, Susan Palmgren and husband Sam, and Scott Simpson; three great grandchildren, Darcy Weeks, Andrea Fink and husband Kevin, and Brent Weeks and wife Elizabeth; four great-great grandchildren, Easton, Emersyn, and Ellison Fink and Emily Weeks. In addition to her husband Forrest, she is preceded in death by her parents; five sisters, Cleo and Merle Snyder, Mildred Conover, Louise Garetson, and Maxine Moody.
Funeral service will be held at Satanta United Methodist Church on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at Dudley Township Cemetery in Satanta. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Sublette on Friday, September 27, 2013 from noon to 8:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund of the Satanta Long Term Care Unit Activity Fund in care of the funeral home.
