Dodge City - Maida Rita Waldman, 87, died July 16, 2023 her home in Dodge City surrounded by her family. She was born on her family farm in Ellis County on December 29, 1935; delivered by her dad. She was the daughter of Henry and Margaret (Munk) Hoff.
Maida was the second of four children. After high school, Maida attended nursing school at St. Anthony's Hospital in Hays where she received her nursing degree. On April 21, 1956, Maida married Robert Waldman in Park, Kansas; together they lived in many Kansas communities including Salina, Hutchinson and Dodge City. Maida served those communities with her nursing knowledge by working OB at the Air Force base in Salina, to caring for the elderly at Trinity Manor in Dodge City where she was the Director of Nursing until her retirement; which she did twice. Maida raised six children while working full time and also supporting Robert in his endeavors. She will be remembered for being a faithful wife, a loving mother, a very involved grandmother, and a best friend.
She was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dodge City.
Maida is survived by her children, Wanda Waldman, Linda Kirby and husband Tim, Mary Bone, Robert Waldman, Michael Waldman and wife Shala, and Kathy Gemaehlich and husband Dean all of Dodge City; 21 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren with two more on the way; and two siblings, Don Hoff and wife Pauline, and Odie Wilson and husband Don both of Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Margaret Hoff; husband, Robert Waldman; and brother, Henry Lee Hoff.
Funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dodge City on Monday, July 24, 2023 at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel in Dodge City on Sunday, July 23, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM with a vigil service to follow at 7:00 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Memorials are suggested to the Robert and Maida Waldman Scholarship Fund through the Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas in care of the funeral home.
