Obituary

Dodge City - Mary Lou Ewy (Sangster) died February 21, 2025 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita Kansas. She was born August 14, 1931 in Protection, Kansas to Ralph Sangster and Lucy Marie Stevenson.

She married Ben A. Ewy April 19, 1951 in Protection Kansas.  They were married for 52 years until his passing on November 4, 2003. They lived in Syracuse, Kansas from 1951 to 1959; then moved and were longtime residents of Dodge City. Two years after her husband's passing, she was lucky enough to find a loving companion, Richard Flax, of 20 years.

Mary worked for Dodge City Livestock doing secretarial duties, and worked as a ward-clerk for Trinity Hospital and worked 26 years at Colombia-Western Plains Regional Hospital also as a ward-clerk both in Dodge City, Kansas.

She was a member of the Pink Lady's Hat Club, Quilt Club and the Sunflower Polka Club. She enjoyed cooking, traveling and was an excellent seamstress and made numerous quilts over the years. Her tireless hands made six beautiful quilts for each of her children, which she was mentioned in a 1996 news article in the Dodge City Daily Globe Newspaper; not to mention all of the baby blankets gifted to her grandchildren. She continually stayed very active walking all through her life. She also had a love for dancing and Richard and Mary attended many dances in the surrounding areas of Kansas, many would say, "they were quite the couple to watch on the dance floor".

Other survivors include her companion of 20 years, Richard Flax; two sons, John Ewy and wife Glynis, Dodge City and Joe Ewy and wife Tonya, Owasso Oklahoma; four daughters, Debra Coulter, Trinidad Colorado, Dee Long and husband Ira, Mound City, Missouri, Sandra Stanley and husband Ronnie, Dodge City, Kansas and Susan Ewy, Manhattan, Kansas; 14 grandchildren, Jamie (Ewy) Eubanks, Aaron Ewy, Joshua Dreiling, Ryan Anderson, Amy (Anderson) Tally, Jodi Anderson, Garret Stanley, Jessa (Stanley) Kennedy, Dustin Stanley, Mason Ewy, Britton (Ewy) Ogilvie,Tyson Ratts, Lindsay (Sterkel) Middleton, and Shelby (Sterkel) Tagtmeyer; and 17 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Lucy Sangster; husband, Ben Ewy; four brothers, Bob Sangster, Dick Sangster, Hud Sangster, Dennis Sangster; and four sisters, Betty Hester, Jennie Oller, Maggie Barrett, and Lila Blasi; one grandson, Joshua Dreiling; and son-in-law, Gary Coulter.

The family would like to thank the staff of Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas and the Phoenix Home Care and Hospice for the exceptional care they provide.

Graveside service will be held at Protection Cemetery. Protection, Kansas on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at 10:00 AM with Pastor Kris Logsdon presiding followed by a Celebration of Life on Saturday, March 1, 2025 from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM at the Dodge City Senior Center, 2408 Central Avenue, Dodge City, Kansas. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Dodge City, on Friday, February 28, 2025 from 1:00 to 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Phoenix Home Care and Hospice, 3450 N.
