Obituary

Mary Irene (Faulds) Scoggins, 87, died Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at Trinity Manor Nursing Home in Dodge City. She was born on March 7, 1923 on the family farm in rural Ford County to Pearl (Allen) and Charles P. Faulds. She grew up on the family farm, attending West Hopewell Elementary School through the 8th grade before moving into Dodge City to attend school. She was a spirited "Daddy's Girl", and sometimes referred to as "Little Charlie" because she spent so much time alongside him doing chores. Long after her move from the family home she continued to be an excellent daughter, spending time and caring for her parents until their deaths.

Mary married George F. Scoggins on November 15, 1941, just weeks before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. When he went into the military, she lived primarily in Ensign with May (Stillwell) and Tom Scoggins, George's parents. She did, however, join George whenever he was stationed in a place suitable for them to live together. Their first child, a daughter, Georgia, was born during his service in the military. Following George's return from the military, Mary gave birth to their second child, a son, Frank. Mary and George moved to Eastern Colorado with a 6 week old baby and 4 year old child to live in a sod house and "break sod" for the Bragg family. Eighteen months later, they returned to the Dodge City area where they farmed South of Dodge City. They retired in the mid 1980's and moved to their home on 3rd Avenue. They lived there until declining health necessitated a move to Trinity Manor in December, 2007. The family is grateful to Mary's niece, Glenda Smotherman, who so lovingly cared for them for four years, allowing them to remain in their home during that time.

Mary was not only a homemaker, but also a constant and equal helpmate to George during the years they ran the family farm/ranch together. They personified the enduring love and commitment of marriage and celebrated their 69th anniversary in November, 2010. During their life together, she did any and everything needed to help make the marriage and the business successful. She was a most loving wife and a marvelous mother and grandmother. She was a woman of great determination, perseverance, dedication, loyalty and creativity.

Mary participated in, and contributed to her community in countless ways. Some of the most obvious were serving as a leader in the Richland Booster 4-H Club, serving on the Hopewell Township Election Board, participating fully at Richland Valley School, contributing whatever was needed as the parent of her children who attended school there. She was a Sunday School teacher and a very active member of the Tri-Phi Class at the First United Methodist Church in Dodge City. She quietly donated blood to the Red Cross as often as she was allowed and became a "multi- gallon donor". She donated until her health no longer allowed her to do so. She was an excellent Seamstress, Cook, Horsewoman, Homemaker, and very good friend to many.

Mary was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, St. Bernard Chapter 97 Order of the Eastern Star, the W.H.C. Extension Unit, and Women of the Moose.

The family would like to honor and recognize the Trinity direct care staff for their kind and compassionate care they provided for Mary in the last three years. They also are grateful to Mary's niece Carrol Ann (Scoggins) Burnett for all the love, care, concern, and energy she has given, in order to make Mary's life easier while she made her home at Trinity Manor.

Mary is survived by her husband, George Franklin Scoggins of Dodge City; one daughter, Georgia (Scoggins) Burke and husband Richard of Dodge City and Reno, Nevada; one son Frank Scoggins and wife Diane Cecchettini of Gig Harbor, Washington; four grandchildren, Stan Scoggins and partner Nelson of Los Angeles, California, Sherrie Crouch Hald and husband Dave of Reno, Nevada, Stephanie Crouch Blach of Elko, Nevada, and Steve Scoggins and wife Sharon of Bellingham, Washington; seven great grandchildren, Rachel and Matthew Hald of Reno, Nevada; Hannah, Andrew, and Sarah Blach of Elko, Nevada; and Abby and Ellie Scoggins of Bellingham, Washington; four sisters, Betty (Faulds) Mead, Alice (Faulds) Haney, Flora (Faulds) Davis, Deloras (Faulds) Eberle; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Velma Faulds, Edna (Scoggins) and Max Rubin, Virginia (Scoggins) and Gerald Herrman, Anne (Allen) Scoggins Arensdorf, and Delbert and Barbara Scoggins.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles P. and Pearl (Allen) Faulds, one brother, James P. Faulds, two sisters, Iva (Faulds) Clark and Eva (Faulds) Brundage; three nephews, Royal Bibb, Charles Clark, and Del Scoggins.
