Obituary

Natalia Swaim passed from this life leaving behind a legacy as colorful, spirited, and memorable as the life she lived. Born on February 19, 1936, in rural Cloud County, Natalia was the daughter of Floy A. (Hunter) Johnson and Sidney C. Johnson. A child of the Great Depression, she carried throughout her life the strength, determination, resilience, and resourcefulness shaped by those early years.

Natalia graduated from Jamestown High School with the Class of 1954. She then became the first in her immediate family to attend and graduate from college, earning her degree in 1956 from Kansas State Teachers College with an emphasis in Home Economics. Growing up on the family homestead, she loved participating in county fairs and proudly showing her registered Duroc pigs.

Natalia married her high school sweetheart, Dr. Bruce C. Champlin, and together they made their home in Dodge City, where they raised four children: Rhonda, (Marc) Rossi, Brad Champlin (preceded in death), Dirk (Te-ee-ah) Champlin, and Cyd (Christopher) Stein. Though their marriage ended after 40 years, they shared many decades of family life and memories. In 2001, Natalia married Robert Swaim, and the two enjoyed 15 golden years together in Dodge City until his passing in 2016.

Natalia was a woman of many talents and abundant energy. She returned to teaching before retirement and devoted herself fully to her husband and community. She was a diligent room mother, active in PTA, assisted with Cub Scouts, created twirling costumes, and generously volunteered through church activities. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and participated in church circle. She also belonged to numerous civic and service organizations, including P.E.O., Beta Sigma Phi, and Order of the Eastern Star.

Natalia embraced life with enthusiasm. She loved tennis, racquet ball, volleyball, golf, cards, and belonged to multiple bridge clubs. She loved to dance and brought fun wherever there was music and laughter. In her later years, while residing at Heath Village in New Jersey she learned bocce ball, corn hole and tabletop shuffleboard, and happily taught many friends how to play Kings on the Corner.

Perhaps one of Natalia's greatest joys was flying her Tri-Pacer airplane across the wide Kansas plains, an expression of the boldness and adventurous spirit that defined her. She was courageous, creative, intelligent, fashionable, and fiercely independent. Natalia took pride in her home and gardens, her elegant holiday decorating, and her remarkable ability to outwork anyone around her. She walked faster than most could keep up with and lived life at much the same pace.

She was also a gifted cook and gracious hostess, famous for homemade ice cream, neighborhood coffees, holiday gatherings, birthdays, and backyard barbecues. Natalia had a special talent for making others feel welcome and celebrated. Her gardens reflected her eye for beauty and her love of nature, where she found peace and delight throughout her life.

Natalia was, in every sense, the life of the party; complex, vibrant, loving, and unforgettable. She leaves behind her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and many dear friends who will treasure her memory and carry forward the life lessons she taught. Natalia lived boldly, loved loyally and leaves a story that will be told with smiles for generations to come.

At Natalia's request, the family will host a memorial service at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Dodge City at 10:00 AM on Monday, June 29, 2026 with Rev. Berniece Ludlum presiding. A later inurnment will take place on the Johnson family homestead in rural Cloud County. There is no visitation as cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, or the Susan G. Komen Foundation in care of Swaim Funeral Chapel.
