Wichita - Opal E. Shaw, 97, died January 13, 2019 at Premier Living, Wichita. She was born on November 21, 1921 at Neodesha, the daughter of Albert and Myrtle (Sherlock) Pettyjohn.
Opal grew up around Fredonia and attended Fredonia Schools. She was a waitress and cook at the Coney Island Restaurant for many years and also owned and operated A1 taxi service in Dodge City. Opal loved her family, animals, crossword puzzles and gardening and was a grandma to half of Dodge City.
She was a member of the Sacred Heart Cathedral of Dodge City.
Opal is survived by her daughter, Judith Schonhoff of Wichita; two sons, Boyd A. Murphy of Bakersfield, California and Donald W. Murphy of Blackhawk, Colorado; nineteen grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, and 30 great great grandchildren; and a brother, Clarence Pettyjohn of Wichita. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Joyce E. Guhr and two brothers, Frank and Melvin Pettyjohn.
Vigil service will be at 7:00 PM Thursday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, at the Cathedral, with Rev. Wesley Schawe presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel on Thursday from Noon to 5:00 PM.
