IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Phyllis M.
Bailey
April 17, 1930 – August 20, 2020
Sublette - Phyllis Bailey, 90, went to her heavenly home on August 20, 2020, after a long illness. She was born on April 17, 1930 to Boyd and Julia Roderick and into a family where the focuses were church, education, and sports. She obtained her bachelor's degree from Southwestern College in Winfield and later her master's degree from Oklahoma State University.
After marrying James Bailey in 1950, they soon settled in Sublette for the remainder of their lives, teaching at the high school. They both loved small town living. Phyllis taught multiple generations cooking, sewing and family living skills. Everyone at SHS knew those smells coming down the hall meant free samples after class! An annual town event was the style/shop show, organized by Phyllis and Jim to display their student's productivity, and it was impressive.
Phyllis was an active volunteer/leader at most community and church service organizations around town. She sponsored Kayettes where multitudes of students were also introduced to serving the community. She was enlisted as an event planner for weddings, banquets and such for decades. Many will remember eating at one of those large dinners Phyllis organized, taking clothing for her to alter, or sharing the produce from their huge garden. She was always willing to help and encourage anyone to try new things.
Phyllis and Jim loved to fish and camp and, in their generous spirit, helped everyone around to catch fish, learn to ski, and share their good cooking! They had lots of fish stories to tell! Phyllis enjoyed watching her grandchildren's sporting events, along with any other live and televised sports. She adored her family and often commented on how lucky she was to have such great daughters, son-in-laws, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her sister Margaret Nelson, brother, Elbert Roderick, two daughters, Susan Westerfield and husband Scott, and Sandra Wiswell and husband Edward. Her grandchildren are Amber Meister and husband Shane, Jake Westerfield and wife Julia, Blake Wiswell and wife Shyree, Caleb Westerfield, Luke Westerfield and wife Jennifer. Her great grandchildren are Mia, Merit, Karter,Kivian,Macsen, Spencer, Sylvie, Landri, Nolan, and baby Jet on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Bryce Roderick and Myron Roderick, husband Jim Bailey, and grandson Charlie.
Phyllis was a vibrant, optimistic, positive woman who had a servant's heart which touched so many.
