Dodge City - Phyllis Joan Schmidt, 82, died February 18, 2019 at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.  She was born on August 9, 1936 in Dodge City, the daughter of John Elmer and Ida May (Tucker) Fitzsimmons.

Joan was as lifetime resident of Dodge City.  She graduated from Dodge City High School in 1957.  She married Elmer Schmidt on December 4, 1971.  He preceded her in death on June 12, 2001.  Joan worked as a nurse's aide at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Dodge City and Kansas Soldiers Home at Fort Dodge.  She also worked at Denny's Restaurant. Joan enjoyed playing cards and bingo as well as visiting with her friends.

She was a member of the Women of the Moose in Dodge City.  Joan attended church at the First Assembly of God in Dodge City.  She was also a long time Senior Companion Volunteer.

Joan is survived by her daughter, Lois Elaine Schmidt and husband Juan Ortiz of Dodge City; a son, Billy Joe Harrod and wife Delfina of Tennessee; two grandsons, Billy Joe Harrod, Jr. and Jacob Isaac Harrod; four granddaughters, Leslie Maria Ortiz, Abigail, Amanda, and Cheyenne Harrod; and many nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer; son, Darrell Dean Harrod; two brothers; five sisters; one grandchild; and one great grandchild.

Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Dodge City on Monday, February 25, 2019 at 2:00 PM with Rev. David Graves presiding.  Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City.  Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Dodge City on Sunday, February 24, 2019 from noon to 6:00 PM.  Memorials are suggested to the family in care of the funeral home.  Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guest book at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.
