Dodge City - Ramona "Mona" M. (Alcaraz) Ortiz, 67, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Trinity Manor Nursing Home in Dodge City.  She was born on December 7, 1950 in Garden City, the daughter of Leonard and Lupe Alcaraz.

On May 22, 1971, Ramona married Nicholas Ortiz, Jr. in Garden City, to that union was born one son; Nicholas L. Ortiz, Jr. III.

Ramona retired from the Kansas State Department of Health and Environment in August of 2017. Throughout her career, Ramona served the youth of Southwest Kansas and their families through the Finney County Status Offenders; Big Brothers Big Sisters; Kansas Rural Legal Services; Trio/Upward Bound at Garden City Community College and USD 443 Migrant Education Program of Dodge City. Ramona also served in Covenant Women at Word of Life Church in Garden City. She enjoyed baking, cooking, and giving to others.

She is survived by her son, Nicholas L. Ortiz, Jr. III; mother, Lupe A. Alcaraz of Dodge City; two sisters, Patricia (Pat) A. Rodriguez and husband Richard of Dodge City, and Mary Kay Remigio of Kansas City, MO; several nephews, nieces and great nephews and nieces. Ramona was preceded in death by her father, Leonard P. Alcaraz and her husband, Nicholas Ortiz, Jr.

Memorial service will be held at Abundant Life Family Church located at 3301 N. Ave A in Dodge City on Friday, June 1, 2018 at 11:00 AM with Dr. Jim Ames and Pastor Lydia Ames presiding.  Burial will follow at 3:00 PM at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.  Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guest book at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.
