Obituary

Cimarron - Ray Orren Oyler, 83, passed away March 11, 2023 at The Shepherd's Center, Cimarron surrounded by his family.  He was born on May 30, 1939 in Dodge City, Kansas, the son of Raymond P. and Mildred (Newberry) Oyler.

He attended Solid Rock School in rural Finney County and Cimarron High School, graduating in 1957. Ray was drafted into the United States Army on December 12, 1961 and honorably discharged on May 25, 1963. He was drafted during the Berlin Crisis and was stationed in Munich, Germany, where he worked on Howitzer tanks. He married Carol Phipps on January 19, 1964. Ray was a craftsman and mechanic among many things. Over the years in the winter he worked at Thomas Implement, Kalvesta Implement, and Magouirk's Chevrolet in Cimarron. He was also a church trustee for many years. The Oyler family has traditions of butchering hogs and making peppernuts at Christmas time, Ray being the mixer. He even made the tool to cut the peppernuts. His favorite time of the year was harvest and calving season. He loved working the land, tending his herd and fixing anything that needed repaired.  He loved helping others any chance he could.

He was a member of the Kalvesta Methodist Church, Finney County Fair Board, and the NRA.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Oyler of the home; four children, Janell Robertson and husband Troy of Dodge City, Brian Oyler and wife Gwen of Cimarron, Leasa Wendel and husband Dan of Ingalls, and Lana Bryant and husband Rodney of Ensign; nine grandchildren, Rachel Fansler and husband Justin, Shelby and Tamara Robertson, Aaron Oyler and wife Sarah, Ashtyn Oyler, Christopher and Samantha Wendel, Weston and Carson Bryant; a great granddaughter, Ree Fansler; his twin, Ramona Mirt; sisters Veta Gossman;Vonia Rein and Ronda (Melvin) Penn; brothers, Glenn (Judy) Oyler, Rex (Deb) Oyler; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Oyler. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Glyndis Oyler; brother, Max Oyler; four brother-in-laws, Steve Gossman, Lewis Mirt, Keith Ott and Daryl Rein; a niece, Glynis McCune; and a nephew, Jeremy Gossman.

Funeral service will be held at Cimarron Methodist Church on Friday March 17, 2023 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Michael Keating presiding.  Burial will follow at Cimarron Cemetery in Cimarron with Military Honors by the United States Army and District #8 Honor Guard.  Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Cimarron on Thursday, March 16, 2023 from 1-8 PM with family present from 5-8PM.  Memorials are suggested to The Shepherd's Center, Ford County 4-H, Gray County 4-H, the Kalvesta Methodist Church, or the Dementia Society of America in care of the funeral home.  Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guest book at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.
