Obituary

Montezuma - Richard "Dick" Usher Boyd, 83, died January 28, 2024, at Bethel Home in Montezuma. He was born on November 10, 1940 in Dodge City, the son of Elton and Lucille (Leathers) Boyd.

Dick was a lifetime resident of Montezuma.  In 1959, he graduated fom Montezuma High School. On March 6, 1964, Dick was united in marriage to Jacquelyn "Jackie" Skidmore.  They celebrated nearly 60 years of marriage. The couple made their home in Montezuma and welcomed two daughters, Kathy and Lisa to complete their family.

Dick worked for Montezuma COOP and Montezuma Feedyard before going to work at Unruh Foster, where he transported new equipment to the store.  He later would work on setting up the equipment for use in the field.  Dick also farmed with his dad, retiring only to begin working on projects in his shop.  He would rebuild gearboxes and fabricated many custom pieces that were needed by people and businesses in the community.

He was a volunteer fire fighter in Montezuma and served on the Montezuma City Council.

Dick is survived by his wife Jackie of the home; two daughters, Kathy Holderness and husband John and Lisa McCarty and husband Terry all of Montezuma; two grandchildren, Connor Brooks and wife Rylie of Yukon, Oklahoma and Colbi Brooks and fiancé, Saul Miller of Ellinwood; two great grandsons, Flynn and Davis Brooks of Yukon, Oklahoma; two sisters, Barbara Humphreys of Jetmore and Roberta Schmidt of Hoisington; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Vernon Boyd.

Graveside service will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Montezuma on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Kyle Woodrow presiding. There is no visitation as cremation has taken place. The family will receive guests at the Montezuma Methodist Church basement following the service.  In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Association of Central and Southwest Kansas or Bethel Home in care of Swaim Funeral Chapel - PO Box 421 - Montezuma, Kansas 67867.  Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guest book at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.
