Obituary

Ft. Dodge - Robert Lee "Bob" Spencer, 72, passed away on January 17, 2021 at the Kansas Soldiers Home, Ft. Dodge.  He was born on January 18, 1948 in Ponca City, Oklahoma the son of R.Q. Spencer and Mary Katherine Lane.

Bob was a graduate of Council Grove High School in 1966 and then attended Kansas State University for one year in pre-veterinary medicine. He then enlisted in the US Army, buddy program, with his friend Fred Archer and served during the Vietnam War with the military scout dog unit from 1968 to 1970. After his military service he attended a welding school in Houston, Texas and then traveled the country with his father building oil refineries. He also spent many years as a rancher and cattle manager his true love. Bob retired from Tindle Construction in Fredonia.

He enjoyed team roping and cattle sorting competitions where he always had his own prize winning horse to help him compete. Bob worked hard but also played hard. He could be found golfing, fishing, or being at the lake with his family driving the boat. He was very competitive in everything he did and was an avid trap shooter. Bob also had a love for animals and for his grandchildren.

Robert was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lewis, Fredonia V.F.W. and National Rifle Association.

Bob is survived by his wife, Karen Spencer of Medicine Lodge; five children, Shannon Wolley and husband Chris of Valley Center, Jason Spencer of Valley Center, Lane Spencer of Amarillo, Texas, Erin Spencer and Tyson McVey of Dodge City, and Jeremy McVey and wife Jaime of Copeland; daughter-in-law, Amy McVey of St. John; fifteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren; a sister, Suzan Barnes of Cottonwood Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and son, Jason McVey.

Memorial graveside service will be held at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery on Friday January 22, 2021 at 11:00 AM. Military Rites will be provided by KSARNG Military Honors and American Legion District 8 honor guard.  Memorials are suggested to the Kansas Soldier's Home in care of the funeral home.  Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guest book at www.swaimfuneralhome.com .
