Obituary

Dodge City - Robert Hardin Newell, 92, died August 19, 2022, at Trinity Manor Nursing Home,Dodge City. He was born on February 21, 1930, on the family farm south of Dodge City, the son of Hardin Harrison and Blanche M. (Durham) Newell.

Robert was a lifetime resident of Ford County and a lifelong farmer of the family homestead south of Dodge City. He was a graduate of Dodge City High School and also Dodge City Junior College. On August 21, 1954, he married Phyllis Ford at Dodge City. He was a supervisor to the Ford County Soil Conservation District in 1963 and served for many years. He was a winner of the 1964 Ford County Outstanding Young Farmer Award. In 1965, he was given the outstanding accomplishment award in soil conservation from the Ford County Soil Conservation District, in 1971 he was given the conservation achievement program award for Kansas.

As he began his journey into retirement he and his wife enjoyed traveling in their motorhome to Texas, Florida, Arizona, California, and many other adventures along the way finally residing in Apache Junction, Arizona for 25 years. After their Arizona adventures concluded, they moved back to Dodge City to enjoy their time with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed going to coffee with friends, playing pool at the senior center, and visiting with anyone he happened to run into in town.

He was a member of Farm Bureau and chairman of the Concord Township Board and attended The First United Methodist Church.

Robert is survived by his wife of 68 years, Phyllis Newell of Dodge City, son, Lane Newell of Dodge City, daughter, Lynn Sutton and husband Rod of Dodge City, grandchildren Mandy and Melissa Sutton, Brett Newell, and Megan Lowe, husband Tate Lowe, and two great granddaughters, Taeven and Tymbree Lowe. He was preceded in death by his parents, and four sisters, Elsie Newell, Mildred Kastler, Francis Gum, and Norma Jean Schoen.

Funeral service will be held at First United Methodist Church on Friday August 26, 2022, at 10:30 AM with Rev. Jerre Nolte presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel on Thursday August 25, 2022, from Noon to 8:00 PM with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church or Dodge City Special Olympics, both in care of the funeral home.
