Obituary

Robert Casper VenJohn, 80, died Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City. He was born on August 22, 1930 at Dodge City the son of Casper and Mary M. (Schmidt) VenJohn.

Mr. VenJohn attended St. Joseph Military Academy in Hays before graduating from Garden City High School. He married Marilynne Kunz in 1951 at Garden City. Robert served in the U S Army during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Fort Riley. They moved to Garden City and later to the family farm near Pierceville where he engaged in dairy farming. In 1967, he moved his family to Dodge City where he was an agent for Continential Oil Company. He later became self-employed and owned a freight company.

He was a member of Christ The King Lutheran Church of Dodge City.

Survivors include his wife, Marilynne of the home; two sons, Marc and wife Marcia VenJohn of Casper, Wyoming; Kurt and wife Penny VenJohn of Kearney, Nebraska; three daughters, Ellen Horton and husband Richard of Albany, Oregon, Elaine Reed and husband Bruce of Douglas, Wyoming, Jane Hawkins and husband Mike of Winfield; one sister, Norma Jean Aton of Roseville, California; 13 grandchildren, Amy Horton - Benkoske, Amanda Horton, Jessica VenJohn, Steven VenJohn, Emilie VenJohn, Dale Ayers, Erica Newcomb, Scott Hawkins, Kit Hawkins, Marty Hawkins, Kurtis VenJohn, Kahlia Erdman, Allie VenJohn; and three great grandaughters, Eve Newcomb, Eden Newcomb, Avrie Erdman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert Michael VenJohn; two brothers, Pete VenJohn and Glen VenJohn; and one great grandson, August Rylan Newcomb.

Funeral service will be held at Christ The King Lutheran Church in Dodge City on Friday, September 24, 2010 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Kent Groethe presiding. Burial will follow at Christ the King Lutheran Cemetery in rural Dodge City. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Thursday, September 23, 2010 from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Memorials can be made to Christ The King Lutheran Church or to the Wounded Warriors in care of the funeral home.
