Obituary

Our dad, Roger Lopez, passed away peacefully, March 21st, 2021 at home with mom and his children around him. He was born on December 26th, 1937 at Howell, KS. The son of Luciano and Maria (Rodriguez) Lopez.

Roger married Mary Jane (Guerrero) Lopez on April 19th, 1958 at Hugoton, KS. They lived their entire married life in Dodge City, KS.  She survives.

He was the youngest boy and the second to the youngest of 14 children.  Even though he came from very humble beginnings, he was very clever, self-disciplined and determined to have a different life for himself.  He started working at a very young age and helped his parents while still at home as a boy and continued to care and support his patents throughout his adult life until their passing.

He attended school in Howell, KS in the one room schoolhouse.  He was out on his own as a young man and began his journey to build a life for his family and learned everything he could with hard work and a strong work ethic about business, building and investing.

He and mom married young in 1958. They both worked hard and built their first home along with the help of friends while in their 20's. In his mid 30's he and mom purchased the Texaco Service Station, later known as "Downtown Service" where he continued to serve many people in our community for over 40 years.  During this time in his life he also started buying rental homes.  He would tear them apart and put them back together nights and evenings after putting in a 10-12 hour work day at the service station.  He even built a few brand new homes with friends in the 80's.  Eventually, his rental business grew to become his full time job.  This was his passion. His labor of love.

He was a member and supporter of Alcoholics Anonymous for 47 years.  He was a very generous man, always willing to help those in need.  If you needed a 'leg-up', dad would always be there for you. No questions asked.

He loved his grand-children and great-grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them.  He appreciated quality work and craftsmanship, but lived his life simply. He admired his family and their accomplishments. Dad was always giving his advice and guidance to all of us about life, business and living simply.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane, of the home; one son, Rodkie of Dodge City, KS and one daughter, Michelle Koehn and her Husband Jeff of Dodge City, KS.4 grandchildren; Celicia and Andrea Lopez of Wichita, KS, Makenzie Gadberry of Dallas, TX and Alec Koehn of Dodge City, KS. As well as 7 great-grandchildren all of Wichita, KS. He is also survived by three sisters Annie Torrez of Florida; Della Scotta of California and Elsie Lopez of Dodge City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Luciano and Maria Lopez and 11 siblings: Joe Lopez, Jesse Lopez, Pete Lopez, Lewis Lopez. Simon Lopez, Manuel Lopez, Agrelio Lopez, Concha Blea, Consuelo Chacon and Molly Rodriguez.
