Obituary

Satanta - Ron D. Lucas, 76, died July 1, 2013 at his home in Satanta. He was born on October 5, 1936 on the family farm north of Satanta, the son of Wayne and Mildred (Black) Lucas.

Ron graduated from Satanta High School in 1954. He then went to Fort Hays State University and graduated with a degree in mathematics. Ron was a substitute teacher in the Satanta school district for many years. On March 19, 1955, he married Shirley Blair at the Satanta United Methodist Church. She survives. Ron was a farmer and a partner in Hoskinson Implement of Sublette from 1980 until his retirement in 2006. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. Attending their activities was an important part of his life. Ron was also the basketball score keeper for Satanta High School for many years.

Ron was very active in the community. He was a member of the Satanta United Methodist Church and served on the church board. Ron also served on the boards of the Satanta School District, Satanta COOP, Northwest Cotton Growers, ASCS, and the Satanta Chamber. He was active in the Gideon's International and the Sons of Thunder in Ulysses.

In addition to his wife, Ron is survived by two sons, Randy Lucas and wife Darlene of Satanta and R.W. Lucas and wife Cathy of Sublette; one daughter, Shannon Lucas of Garden City; one brother, Wes Lucas of Garden City; two sisters, Marilyn Schmale of Garden City and Vicki Selby of Denver; five grandchildren, Tanner Lucas and wife Nicole of Garden City, Ashley Lucas of Beloit, Spencer Lucas of Lawrence, Hope Simmons and husband Damon of Lawrence, and Emily Stroud of Lakin; and two great granddaughters, Makenzie and Breckyn Lucas of Garden City. He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jed Lucas.

Funeral service will be held at Satanta United Methodist Church on Friday, July 5, 2013 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Kelvin Heitmann presiding. Burial will follow at Dudley Township Cemetery in Satanta. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel of Sublette on Thursday, July 4, 2013 from Noon to 6:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to Gideon's International, Satanta Methodist Church, or Sons of Thunder in care of the funeral home.
